NOTES: A very solid foundation for, basically, a one column layout. The color isn’t my choice but I really love the flexibility and simplicity of this WordPress theme. It says on the site that color variations are available on request but it’s pretty easy to change the color of the site as the entire theme is pretty much image-free.

NOTES:
Another amazing free theme for WordPress that has a lot of artistic style and a very nice, solid layout. It does have a limited number of Pages that you can have listed in the navigation but still has a great two-column design where one for your recent posts and another for Featured content. Nice styling of photographs and good use of typography and images really make this WordPress theme good-to-go right out of the box!

A very specific theme, JobPress is perfect for running a job board with filtered jobs by category and an Admin Setting page that allows you to paste in your PayPal account info for payments. Very robust, slick design, well worth the price (especially the promo price!).

NOTES:
A very true, structured news theme, News Plus has everything you’d expect from a copy heavy theme. Where it really shines is in it’s ability to show a lot of different posts on the home page but with the formating and style of a true, big budget news site. A must if you’ve got a copy heavy site and great for SEO.

My favorite WordPress designer, Jason Schuller has created a new site dedicated to his premium WordPress themes. Not only are his themes the best around when it comes to video templates, his new site, Press75.com, is a very beautiful site as well. I love the clean look and have to admit, I’m very jealous of the domain name. I was born in ‘75 myself and wish I would’ve thought of that domain name for myself! ARG.

Create a WordPress Theme from Scratch, Pt.1

Kailoon from Themetation has put together an excellent walk though for creating a WordPress theme from scratch. The first part of the three part tutorial covers “Structuring, Designing in Photoshop“– and I’m sure you could use Fireworks as well. I would say that this first part is almost required reading for any designer out there as it really focuses on what’s important and, in my opinion, addresses visual weight really well.

Part two will cover “Slicing and Coding” and the final part (part three) will cover “WordPress Implementation”. If these last two tutorials are as detailed yet succinct as this first one, the entire design community is in for a real treat!

Big News #1: WordPress Starter Theme Project

I’ve been searching the internets for a way to take my knowledge of HTML/CSS and design and add PHP to it and so far that’s been unsuccessful. I just don’t seem to have the time. So I’ve had to turn to Jason or others to help me make my designs a reality in WordPress skin.

Well, thanks to Dan Philibin at WPCandy.com, my prayers seemed to be answered! He’s released a bunch of files that should help the transition to, at least, grasping the WordPress structure a bit better as well as make the development process a bit smoother.
